Picks: Week 5

Since not everyone picks every game every week, I’ve decided to rank based not on winning percentage, but on total number right. First numbers = record from last week, 2nd numbers = record overall.

The Leaderboard:

Chuck Visor: 7-3, 13-7
Max Power: 3-7, 10-10
Drake McHugh, Esq.: 3-7, 8-12
Dick C'est Bon: 3-5, 7-10
Brocktoon: 3-7, 7-13
Woody Widenhoefer: 6-3, 6-3
Arnold Porkzenegger: 3-4, 3-4
Carter Slade: 3-6, 3-6
Full Monte Kiffin: 2-8, 2-8

Leave your picks in the comments. My picks for the week, after the jump.

Alabama (-16) at Kentucky (SEC Network, 11:21 AM): Alabama impressively shut down Ryan Mallett’s much-hyped super-arm last week. Also, with McElroy they are a threat to both run and pass. Bama covers.

LSU (+3) at Georgia (CBS, 2:30 PM): Both of these teams have a lot to prove. UGA’s only loss came on a long trip to OK State where they barely scored, followed by shoot-outs with SC and Arky, followed by more offensive ineptitude in a close win over AZ State. Which UGA team will show up tomorrow? LSU is barely 4-0, with closer than they should have been games against Washington, Vandy and Miss State (winning by 4 inches is a close game, folks!) Flip a coin. Tails. LSU.

Ole Miss (-10) at Vanderbilt (ESPNU, 6:00 PM): This is where Ole Miss’ begins its slow, steady climb back to a good season (good now likely defined as similar to last year), or else allows a letdown upset leading to a death-spiral. Vandy found its offense last week against Rice, but they’re still Vandy. I predict the Rebs are hung over from their loss to SC and play flat. They win but don’t cover.

South Carolina (no line) vs. South Carolina State (ESPN Classic, 6:00 PM): Raise your hand if you know SC State’s mascot. LIARS! You never heard of this team. (It’s a historically black land grant institution in Orangeburg, SC founded in 1896. Mascot is the Bulldogs.) Gamecocks win big.

Arkansas (straight up) vs. Texas A&M (ESPN2, 6:30 PM): a sort of neutral site game at the new Jerry Jones-dome in Dallas. Under over on punts hitting the scoreboard: .5. If you are like me and stopped paying attention to the fact that TAMU had a team when they became really bad under Dennis Franchione, you will be surprised to learn they are undefeated so far this year. So far. Ess Eee Seeeee! Hogs win.

Mississippi State (+5.5) vs. Georgia Tech (ESPN GP / CSS, 6:30 PM): two rules collide: (1) always pick against the ACC team that had a good performance the previous week (2) never put money on MSU. However, the game is at Starkville, MSU played tough at home against LSU last week, and I picked MSU to cover against Vandy and they up and won. I’ll take MSU and the points.

Auburn (+2.5) at Tennessee (ESPN, 6:45 PM): Auburn’s offense is great, Malzahn is a rockstar. But UT held the Gators to 23 and Eric Berry is a beast. UT’s quarterback is a joke. But Ball State scored 30 on AU. All these things are true, and I understand why some are saying Hardesty and Brown will establish the run for UT, keep the Ball away from Malzahn’s squad, dominate on D, and win the game in Neyland. But, I think it’s more likely that AU sells out to stop the run, forcing Crompton to throw and, well, there will be picks. AU’s defense has 8 picks on the season, Crompton has thrown 8 picks on the season. Advantage AU. And you’re giving me 2.5 points? Thank you.

Bonus pick 1: Michigan (+3.5) at Michigan State: How is Michigan the underdog. So they’re playing in Lansing. Sparty lost to E. Mich. (or was it W.?) Yeah, yeah, Mich. Played poorly and should have lost to Indiana. I still think Mich. is the superior team, so I’m definitely taking them plus the points.

Bonus pick 2: Oklahoma (-7.5) at Miami: Never underestimate two things: (1) the inconsistency of an ACC team, and Stoops’ ability to blow a big game. Da U is back, part 2? Well, I’ll at least say they lose by less than 8.

  1. Alabama (-16) at Kentucky (SEC Network, 11:21 AM): Bama covers.

LSU (+3) at Georgia (CBS, 2:30 PM): I don't know why, but I have a feeling Chavis gets his act together and LSU upsets the Bulldogs between the hedges.

Ole Miss (-10) at Vanderbilt (ESPNU, 6:00 PM): Ole Miss wins

South Carolina (no line) vs. South Carolina State (ESPN Classic, 6:00 PM): USCe wins

Arkansas (straight up) vs. Texas A&M (ESPN2, 6:30 PM): I like Arky here... This may be Sherman's last year at A&M

Mississippi State (+5.5) vs. Georgia Tech (ESPN GP / CSS, 6:30 PM): State looked godo last week. I think they upset Tech here.

Auburn (+2.5) at Tennessee (ESPN, 6:45 PM): Too close for me to call, but I think AU somehow pulls this out even though I'd rather UT win.

Bonus pick 1: Michigan (+3.5) at Michigan State: I don't see is not favored either... They win big.

Bonus pick 2: Oklahoma (-7.5) at Miami: Oklahoma wins, covers and takes UM down ANOTHER notch.

  2. Alabama (-16) at Kentucky (SEC Network, 11:21 AM): Alabama covers easily in this snoozer...

LSU (+3) at Georgia (CBS, 2:30 PM): Tough game to pick. But, I like the Dawgs to win and be impressive in doing so. UGS covers.

Ole Miss (-10) at Vanderbilt (ESPNU, 6:00 PM): My heart tells me to pick the Rebels to cover in a sound beating of the 'Dores. But my brain tells me that never happens so I'll take the Rebels to win by 3.

South Carolina (no line) vs. South Carolina State (ESPN Classic, 6:00 PM): Gamecocks win big and continue their march toward showdowns with Tennessee and Florida which could allow Spurrier to climb back to the top.

Arkansas (straight up) vs. Texas A&M (ESPN2, 6:30 PM): Interesting match-up... Arky wins as Petrino needs a solid victory over someone.

Mississippi State (+5.5) vs. Georgia Tech (ESPN GP / CSS, 6:30 PM): GT wins and covers. State is still recovering from the heartbreak of last week.

Auburn (+2.5) at Tennessee (ESPN, 6:45 PM): If UT had any talent at the QB position, I'd take them in this match-up. But alas, they don't and Chizzy matches his total number of victories at Iowa State in less than half a season at Auburn. Auburn wins and covers.

Bonus pick 1: Michigan (+3.5) at Michigan State: Michigan wins.

Bonus pick 2: Oklahoma (-7.5) at Miami: Boomer Sooner in this one, but OU does not cover.

  3. My picks, which I hope are better than last week (oh, who am I kidding? they couldn't be worse...could they?):

Alabama (-16): I thought Kentucky could keep in close against flu-ridden Florida. Apparently I was wrong. Alabama wins big. (GAMBLING ALERT: this of course means that Bama won't cover, since I'm not 0-4 on Bama picks against the spread)

LSU (+3): Are either of these teams actually good anymore? Georgia survives last week. So does LSU, and both were favored by 12 to 13 points. Advantage: no one.

Ole Miss (-10): 10 points, really? Ole Miss scatters, smothers, and covers Vanderbilt like a plate of Waffle House hash browns.

South Carolina (+0): Yay, I got one right.

Texas A&M (+0): Ryan Mallett forgets that not everyone is 6'7" and consistently overthrows his receivers. Advantage: Texas A&M.

Ga. Tech (-5.5): I know that you pick against the ACC, and Tech isn't playing well, so they should win, right? But then MSU plays well against LSU but bad against Auburn. I don't really know and wouldn't be surprised if this pick was wrong, no matter who I chose.

Auburn (+2.5): Auburn wins by around 7-10 points, and 2.5 points free added on top. Is Tennessee relevant anymore? Sure they played OK against Florida, but they played poorly against Ohio?!?

Michigan (+3.5): So they COULD lose by a field goal and I could still get the pick right? Can I place confidence points on a game too?

Oklahoma (-7.5): I hate ACC schools (for being bad in the consistency column), and I hate Bob Stoops (for his and Mike's rigging of the 2004 poll). But I hate Miami more for losing me a lot of confidence points at Yahoo last week. Go Sooners! (but just for this week)

I bet I get at least one of these correct.

  4. CORRECTION: Why did it put "not" in there again? I am 0-4 on Bama. Stupid comments.

  5. Alabama (-16) at Kentucky (SEC Network, 11:21 AM): Bammeroids win and cover

LSU (+3) at Georgia (CBS, 2:30 PM): LSU wins but LSU will still give up a few 3rd down conversions that they shouldn't aka 3rd and Chavis

Ole Miss (-10) at Vanderbilt (ESPNU, 6:00 PM): Ole Miss wins and covers

South Carolina (no line) vs. South Carolina State (ESPN Classic, 6:00 PM): cocks

Arkansas (straight up) vs. Texas A&M (ESPN2, 6:30 PM): pigs

Mississippi State (+5.5) vs. Georgia Tech (ESPN GP / CSS, 6:30 PM): ring those cowbells

Auburn (+2.5) at Tennessee (ESPN, 6:45 PM): The Vols win and cover. Crompton doesn't throw a pick because he hands it off to Hardesty and Brown every single play.

Bonus pick 1: Michigan (+3.5) at Michigan State: Michigan

Bonus pick 2: Oklahoma (-7.5) at Miami: Miami

  7. Alabama (-16) at Kentucky (SEC Network, 11:21 AM): Bama. Duh.

LSU (+3) at Georgia (CBS, 2:30 PM): Unless Joe Cox's head actually explodes this week (like it ALWAYS looks like it is about to do), Georgia will take this one by more than a FG.

Ole Miss (-10) at Vanderbilt (ESPNU, 6:00 PM): As much as I want to, I just don't have much faith in Vandy this season. Ole Miss comes back after their debacle and wins this one bigger than 10.

South Carolina (no line) vs. South Carolina State (ESPN Classic, 6:00 PM): Gamecocks, of course.

Arkansas (straight up) vs. Texas A&M (ESPN2, 6:30 PM): I have to go Hog wild and stick with my SEC guys on this one.

Mississippi State (+5.5) vs. Georgia Tech (ESPN GP / CSS, 6:30 PM): Miss State has really been impressive this year. Georgia Tech has already beated Clemson and UNC, so they have done all I could have ever asked of them. I think Miss State with the points takes this one.

Auburn (+2.5) at Tennessee (ESPN, 6:45 PM): Rocky Top is the epitome of home field advantage when the crowd has some real reason to cheer. Are they back to that point yet? I don't think so, but then again I think the myth of Auburn is more powerful than Auburn this year. Thus, the crowd will be up and the Vols will take this one.

Bonus pick 1: Michigan (+3.5) at Michigan State: Dude, I don't think Michigan State has been favored in this game since the days of the Flint Stones (TJ Duckett's crew, not Fred's). I don't think they deserve it this year though. Wolverines take this one.

Bonus pick 2: Oklahoma (-7.5) at Miami: Miami has got to pull it together after letting me down last week. Canes.

  8. Alabama vs. Kentucky: Alabama big over Kentucky. They cover.

Georgia vs. LSU: Georgia over LSU. LSU has shown nothing this year so far.

Ole Miss vs. Vandy: Vandy wins. Ole Miss is too dejected from finding out that they aren't a top-5 (or even a top-25) team.

USC vs. USC. St.: USC wins big.

Arkansas vs. Texas A&M: Arkansas wins in a close one.

Miss. St. vs. Ga. Tech: Ga. Tech wins and covers.

Auburn vs. Tenneessee: Auburn wins big and shows they're for real.

Michigan vs. MSU: Michigan wins big.

Oklahoma vs. Miami: Miami bounces back and takes down an over-rated Oklahoma team.
