A sensible article from and LSU fan.

I told a coworker of mine who is an LSU fan that it would have been a better game if all of LSU's players didn't get hurt. Peterson with the cramps...he was suffering from the flu last week, so it wasn't that surprising that he was cramping up.

  3. On January 1, 1973 I watched my Crimson Tide play Texas in the Cotton Bowl. Both teams were highly ranked & the winner would certainly be in the National Championship picture. Alabama was the higher ranked favorite that day as Bryant was facing his old friend, Darrell Royal, who had taught him the wishbone offense before the 1971 season.

Alabama led 13-10 late in the 4th quarter but Texas was driving. The Texas QB, Alan Lowry, called his own number and ran down the sidelines for a 34 yard scamper and a score with 4:22 left on the clock. The CBS broadcast showed the play over & over in slow motion as Lowry appeared to step out of bounds with his left foot as he planted to turn up the sidelines. It was called a touchdown and Texas won the game 17-13.

A few days later I watched the Bear Bryant replay show on TV. As the 'play of the game' approached I listened intently to hear what my Coach would have to say. The play unfolded & Charlie Thornton, the show's announcer, commented that it looked like "the refs missed that one". Coach Bryant didn't miss a beat as he said "if our defense had been over there to put a bonnet (helment) on him, we wouldn't have to worry about a ref's call".

That was almost 37 years ago.

It was the only play in the game that I can remember.

It was the only comment that I can remember Coach Bryant making about the game.

    Roll Tide!
